This is going to be a banger

Sir Alex Ferguson will return to the Old Trafford dugout as Manchester United manager later this year.

He, all 22 starting players and the mighty Pierluigi Collina will play a charity rematch of the notorious Champions League final of 1999 that saw United secure the treble, an unparalleled feat in English football.

Sir Alex returned to the Old Trafford stands in September after life-saving surgery on a brain haemorrhage in May. He will manage a Red Devils legends team on May 26, 20 years to the day that he was victorious over Bayern Munich.

The likes of David Beckham, Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer are all signed up and OGS could well be confirmed as United’s first team manager by the time the match is played.

All proceeds from the match will go to the Manchester United Foundation charity.

Sir Alex Ferguson returns

Sir Alex said: “I’m really looking forward to what will be a special day at Old Trafford.

“It will be great to catch up with some familiar faces and a great opportunity to support the work of Manchester United Foundation.”

Will we again hear the immortal words “And Solskjaer has won it” that week?

Maybe at Old Trafford, but at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium six days later for this year’s Champions League final it seems unlikely. United must overturn a 2-0 deficit away at PSG to progress to the competition’s quarter finals. Can he do it?
