1981 comes round again
Liverpool have drawn Roma in their Champions League semi-final, while Real Madrid will face Bayern Munich in the other bracket.
It makes for an interesting historical parallel that prophet Gary Lineker has highlighted.
The last time the competition’s final four teams were German, Italian, Spanish and English Liverpool won. Those teams were Liverpool, obviously, Bayern, Internazionale and Real Madrid.
The last time the 4 semi-finalists were from Italy, England, Germany and Spain was in 1981. The winners were Liverpool.

What’s more, in 1981, Liverpool beat Real Madrid in the final.
The only remaining English side in the competition beat Manchester City 5-1 on aggregate in the quarter-finals, and will now face the side that came back from 4-1 to beat Barcelona 3-0 last Tuesday night in one of the most famous fightbacks in the history of the competition.
The first leg of the semi-final will be played at Anfield on 24 and 25 April, with the second leg following one week later in the Italian capital on 1 and 2 May.
In the other semi-final, Real Madrid will take on Bayern Munich.
Now make three signs of the cross and say your scouse rosaries.
