Sergio Romero finally appears to be on the brink of leaving Manchester United after hopes of a move to Everton were dashed on transfer deadline day.
After playing understudy to David De Gea for five years, the Argentine stand-in goalkeeper has slipped to third choice at Old Trafford following Dean Henderson’s return from a loan at Sheffield United.
Henderson’s return appeared to spell the end of Romero at United, but despite plenty of interest from English clubs and from abroad, he remained with the club after deadline day – much to the annoyance of his wife, who made her feelings known in a scathing Instagram post.

United’s failure to to move Romero on after deadline day leaves his options of finding a new club limited. He could still move to a Championship club, but wages and a drop to the second tier of English football make that unlikely.
Another possible exit-route is a move to the United States, where Major League Soccer sides are permitted to sign new players until October 29. Romero, who has remained at home in Argentina in the hope his future will be resolved, is keen on the idea of a switch to MLS according to a report in the Daily Mail. No further details are given over interest from any specific clubs, but the same report claims the keeper is lining up a transfer.
Romero remaining at United beyond deadline day was just one part of a(nother) disastrous transfer window for the club, in which they missed out on the four priority signings identified by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
