There’s a real irony to the choice of advert placed in the Telegraph’s latest Arsene Wenger update

We're sure it was just a coincidence

As you’ve probably heard by now, Arsene Wenger might or might not be on the cusp of leaving Arsenal.

After a couple of decades at the helm, there’s a growing sense amongst some of the club’s supporters that the time is right for the Frenchman to step down. After defeat to West Brom on Saturday – one that would leave the club in sixth by the end of the weekend – it seemed that even the man himself was hinting he might soon be calling time on his career at the club.

“Don’t worry, I know what I will do in my future,” he told a press conference following the 3-1 loss.  “So, you will soon know. Very soon. You will see.”

Although there’s no official word on Wenger’s future just yet, several outlets were reporting on Sunday evening that the 67-year-old was not hinting at an imminent departure. Instead, they claimed that Wenger intended to stay on at the club for another year.

As you might expect, plenty of Arsenal supporters weren’t too happy about it.

In contrast, fans of Tottenham, their local rivals, were welcoming the idea of an extended Arsenal stay for Wenger. Although Spurs somehow managed to not finish above them on the final day of last season, there’s a strong sense this season (backed up by the current league table) that Mauricio Pochettino’s men have overtaken Arsenal as the stronger of North London’s teams.

With this in mind, we’re sure everyone can appreciate the irony of the advert – featuring Tottenham’s Harry Kane and the word ‘celebrate’ – which coincidentally appeared slap bang in the middle of a Telegraph story on Wenger’s desire to stay with the club…
