The Mexico forward posted a heartfelt tribute on Instagram
Carlos Vela’s grandfather passed away a day after his grandson’s part in Mexico’s history World Cup victory over Germany, and the Los Angeles FC forward has taken to Instagram to post a tribute to him.
Vela played an intrinsic role in the victory, which places his country in a position to qualify for the Round of 16 with victory against South Korea on Saturday.
The game was decided by a 35th minute winner by PSV Eindhoven attacker Hirving Lozano, who terrorised the German defence all day, after he capitalised on a quick counter-attack move to put Joachim Low’s side to the sword.
In the Instagram post, the former Arsenal and Real Sociedad man paid tribute to his grandfather:
“Last victory that you got to see, Grandpa. I hope you were very proud of me.”

Vela received rave reviews for his part in the game, which saw him substituted on the 59th minute. Throughout he was a threat to a stagnant German team, who were unable to cope with the speed and incisive play of the Mexicans.
“He was one of our best players today,” Mexico head coach Juan Carlos Osorio said after the game.
Vela moved to Major League Soccer side LAFC on January 1, 2018, and has enjoyed an extremely successful debut season in the United States.
