Police are searching for two suspects

Thieves have stolen priceless jewels from the Swedish royal family in an audacious heist.

Jewels belonging to former monarchs Karl IX and Kristina were stolen from the Strängnäs Cathedral in Stockholm, on Tuesday.

Two royal crowns and one orb were taken, which date back to the 17th century.

Witnesses reported two men fleeing the cathedral, who then entered an open-top speedboat, across the sea from outside the building. Police boats and helicopters were involved in the hunt for the thieves, and the cathedral was put on lockdown.

As reported by CNN, Tor Sevelius, commanding officer at the police’s management center, said “To a limited extent we are still looking for [them] both on the ground and at sea. We have no new findings so far”.

Police spokesman Thomas Agnevik told Expressen that they were looking for “any boat that may seem interesting”.
