Two royal crowns and one orb were taken, which date back to the 17th century.
Witnesses reported two men fleeing the cathedral, who then entered an open-top speedboat, across the sea from outside the building. Police boats and helicopters were involved in the hunt for the thieves, and the cathedral was put on lockdown.
As reported by CNN, Tor Sevelius, commanding officer at the police’s management center, said “To a limited extent we are still looking for [them] both on the ground and at sea. We have no new findings so far”.
Police spokesman Thomas Agnevik told Expressen that they were looking for “any boat that may seem interesting”.

A press secretary from the swedish church says they had guards inside the cathedral when the crowns and the orb were stolen – but that they did not detect the theft before the thieves had fled. The Cathedral in Strängnäs is closed until further notice.
