Nintendo has ‘killed’ Luigi, and it has not gone down well at all

Wil Jones

Farewell, sweet prince. WAAAAHH!

Luigi Mario is one of the most beloved characters in popular media. While sometimes overshadowed by his more famous brother ‘Super’ Mario Mario, the green-overalls wearing plumber has starred in tens of classic video games, and he’s also been the subject of many popular memes.

Luigi first appeared in the original Mario Bros arcade game in 1983, and has since been a vital part of most Super Mario franchises, including Super Mario Bros, Mario Kart, Smash Brothers, Mario Tennis and Mario Party. He got his first lead role in 2001’s  Luigi’s Mansion on the Gamecube, and was played by John Leguizamo in the infamous Super Mario Bros movie.

But sadly, on August 8th, 2018, Luigi passed away.

Nintendo held a special Smash Bros Direct event to reveal details on of the upcoming Super Smash Bros Ultimate on the Switch. And in the trailer revealing the game’s new character, we saw Luigi’s shocking demise.

In the reveal that Castlevania‘s Simon Belfort would be in the game, Luigi is literally scared to death by a Grim Reaper figure, and his soul leaves his body.

2018 is a horrible, scary place, and we did not need this Nintendo. Not cool.

HOWEVER – there may be a chance he survived. The Nintendo UK Versus said that “Luigi is okay”. Maybe, the somehow managed to reattach his soul with his body. We’ll believe it when we see it.

Luigi Mario is survived by his brother Mario Mario, and his partner Daisy, his evil doppelgänger Waluigi, and his son (?) Baby Luigi.
