Enjoying this week of mild, spring weather, are you? Eating your lunch in the park? Optimistically carrying your sunglasses around, using them at any opportunity, desperate for that sweet vitamin D? Me too. But I have bad news: it’s not going to last.
Well, it might return, but temperatures are expected to plummet this weekend across the UK.
While average temperatures in March usually range between 10 and 13 degrees celsius, they could rise as high as 19 degrees today (Friday) before dropping suddenly on Saturday to as low as eight degrees.
Sky News weather producer Joanna Robinson said: “Friday will bring yet more sunshine to England, Wales and southeast Ireland, once early fog lifts. The rest of the UK and Ireland will see more in the way of cloud, but it will stay on the mild side.
“Temperatures will generally range from 13C (55.4F) to 16C (60.8F) in the sunshine, 10C (50F) to 13C (55.4F) under the cloud, but 15C (59F) is possible in eastern Scotland.”
So that’s all well and good, but I urge you once again to make the most of it because this weekend will be very cold. Widespread frost is expected on Monday.
The Met Office has warned that the north will see rain on Saturday, while the south will stay mostly dry.
But by Sunday (Mother’s Day – you’re welcome), temperatures will drop to between eight degrees in the north and 12 degrees in the south.
Met Office spokesman Graeme Madge said: “Anywhere has the potential of seeing frost into Monday and temperatures will be dropping sharply.
“April frosts are not unknown by any means but there will be quite heavy frosts for the first few days of April with significant temperature drops overnight and people might be lulled into a false sense of security.”
