The company is recalling two of its models after multiple injuries and the death of a child
Exercise equipment company, Peloton, has been forced to started recalling its ‘Tread’ and ‘Tread+’ treadmills/running machines across the US, after it has been reported that there have been a number of injuries and the death of one child.
The advice from US regulators has warned people to stop using the machines if they have children or pets. This is following a number of incidents which have been reported since April – over 70 in total, including one fatality.
As was confirmed by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the products have seen multiple pets and children being pulled underneath the rear roller of the treadmills, leading to everything from cuts and grazes to fractures and even death.
The New-York-based company initially labelled initial warnings and concerns as “inaccurate and misleading” but video footage which was released to the CPSC’s YouTube and other clips were posted to social media.
Peloton has reiterated that people need to make sure they read all of the important user safety information before operating. They had this to say in their full statement:
“The importance of following Peloton’s safety warnings and instructions is abundantly clear […] In particular, Peloton instructs members to remove the safety key when the Tread+ is not in use, precisely to avoid the kind of incident that this video depicts.
When the safety key is detached as instructed, the Tread+ cannot be turned on. The Tread+ includes safety warnings and instructions in several places, including in the user manual, in a safety card left on top of the Tread+ tray on delivery, and on the product itself.”
Shares in the company, whose running machines retail from $4,000 looks, have dropped by nine per cent since the accidents were first reported.
