Woman ‘has proof’ extra iPhone cameras are fake

Charlie Herbert

I’m so confused… are they fake?”

A woman has posted a TikTok asking whether the extra cameras on new iPhones are actually pointless and fake.

The three back-facing cameras were introduced by Apple for the Pro versions of the iPhones 11, 12 and 13, but in the video Kayla (@kaylathayla) covers two of them up whilst still being able to film the video.

Facing a mirror and with her phone recording, Kayla covers one, then two of the cameras without any change to the video. Then when she covers the third, it blocks the video.

This prompts her to ask the good folk at Apple ‘WTF’ is going on, captioning the video: “I’m so confused… are they fake?”

The video has racked up 1.4 million likes and been viewed 11.3 million times.

Some of you will already know the simple solution to this conundrum though, and many in the comments were quick to provide Kayla with the answer.

The three iPhone cameras are not all in use at the same time, and whether they are in use is dependent on what settings you’re using on your phone and factors such as lighting and zoom.

In this video, Kayla is using a wide shot and the other cameras would only be in use if the lighting changed or if she zoomed in or out.

One person commented: “I don’t think people understand how cameras work.”

Another said: “She really thought she was onto something here.”

A third put: “Y’all really think all 3 cameras work at once?”

While another simply put: “Tell me you’re American without actually telling me.”

It seems that, whilst it’s up for debate whether iPhones have a number of pointless features or not, the three cameras are not one of them.
