Hoarding more wealth than Smaug
Despite his extreme wealth, Elon Musk has claimed that he doesn’t own a home and instead chooses to couch surf between friends.
While having an estimated wealth of $264.6 billion (£203.2 billion), making him the richest man on the planet, Musk has claimed that he doesn’t have a place to call home. Speaking to TED’s Chris Anderson, the 50-year-old tech mogul, claimed, “I don’t even own a place right now, I’m literally staying at friends’ places.”
He added: “If I travel to the Bay Area, which is where most of Tesla’s engineering is, I basically rotate through friends’ spare bedrooms.”
With Musk’s ridiculous wealth, he could buy a home with ease, or perhaps an apartment block, or his very own 1-person hotel. He must be saving his coin for a rainy day.
Talking about the response to billionaires from the general public, Musk emphasised that: “For sure, it would be very problematic if I was spending billions of dollars a year in personal consumption, but that is not the case.”
“It’s not as though my personal consumption is high,” he said.“I mean, the one exception is the plane, but if I don’t use the plane then I have less hours to work.”
Back in March, it was announced that Musk had finished selling all seven of his California homes, with the profit totalling $25m, according to Sky News. While Musk claims to be couch surfing now, he was living in Boca Chica, Texas, just two months ago.

“I do live in a $50k house, but not this specific one,” tweeted Musk beneath a tweet from Tesla Owners Silicon Valley that showcased the unusual living quarters.
