Kenny Baker, the actor best known for his portrayal of R2-D2 in the Star Wars films, has died at the age of 83.

Baker starred in the original trilogy, providing vocals for loveable droid R2-D2 as well as occupying the costume. He reprised his role in the three prequels between 1999 and 2005.

He was credited as a consultant for Episode VII, which was released in December of last year.

Baker was noted for his small stature, standing at just 3’8″ – making him perfect for the role of R2-D2.

He also featured in several other eighties favourites, including The Goonies, Time Bandits and Flash Gordon.

His Star Wars co-star Mark Hamill paid tribute to his friend and colleague today.

For Star Wars fans, it was the perfect tribute:

“He WAS the droid I was looking for!” is a line that will immediately make sense to Star Wars fans.
