It is being reported that the next incarnation of Call of Duty will not have a traditional single-player campaign, instead focusing on online play and the popular Zombies mode.
A source with knowledge of the project told gaming site Polygon that with a 12 October release date penciled in for the game there would not be enough time to finish the campaign in time for shipping.
The move is not entirely without precedent, the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of Black Ops 3 shipped without a single-player campaign and it is not believed it had a significant effect on sales. As any gamer is probably aware, the main focus has always been on multiplayer.
The speculation comes ahead of the Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 full reveal on 17 May.
When reached for comment, an Activision spokesperson told Polygon: “We don’t comment on rumor and speculation. We look forward to revealing Black Ops 4 on May 17th.”
