“Snake! Snake! Snaaaaaaakkkkkeee!!!!!!!!”
The first Metal Gear Solid game is getting a PlayStation 5 remake, according to reports.
The story, as reported by GamesRadar, comes from YouTube channel RedGamingTech, and says that it will be a full remake of the PlayStation 1 classic, not just a remaster. It will be a PlayStation 5 console exclusive, and also be on PC.
They also report that Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots will all be getting spiffy new HD remasters as well, though they won’t be full remakes like the first game. There is no word if those remasters will be PlayStation exclusives as well.
It would not be the first time Metal Gear Solid has been remade. Back in 2004, The Twin Snakes was released on the Nintendo Gamecube, which saw the game remade with then-state-of-the-art graphics, rerecorded voice acting and new cutscenes written and directed by cult Japanese film director Ryuhei Kitamura.
Things have been generally pretty quiet on the Metal Gear front, since series creator Hideo Kojima left Konami in 2015. Metal Gear Survive was released in 2018 without Kojima’s involved, and was pretty much derided by fans.
Hideo Kojima went on to produce the wonderfully insane Death Stranding for Sony.
This is not the only classic Konami property that might be getting a new lease of life on the PlayStation 5. Earlier this year, rumours spread that there was a new Silent Hill game in production, but nothing has been confirmed.
It does look like Metal Gear Solid will be getting a re-release of some sort in the near future, regardless of if the full remake is coming or not. PC Gamer have reported that new ratings on the Taiwan Digital Game Rating Committee website seem to confirm that PC versions on Metal Gear Solid 1 & 2, along with the original MSX Metal Gear, are on the horizon.
