If you’re hoping to use your PS4 controllers on the new PlayStation 5, you may be disappointed
Writing in the official PlayStation Blog, Sony confirmed that PS4 controllers can only be used for playing backwards compatible PS4 games on PlayStation 5.
In a blog post, Sony answered the question, ‘Will DualShock 4 work with PS5 games?’, saying:
“No, we believe that PS5 games should take advantage of the new capabilities and features we’re bringing to the platform, including the features of DualSense wireless controller.”
Sony also confirmed that, while the PS4 controller would not be compatible with PlayStation 5 games, a number of other PS4 peripherals would work on the new console, which is due to be released at the end of 2020.
“Specialty peripherals, such as officially licensed racing wheels, arcade sticks, and flight sticks, will work with PS5 games and supported PS4 games,” the blog post said.
“The Platinum and Gold Wireless Headsets, as well as third-party headsets that connect via USB port or audio jack, will work on PS5 (the headset companion app is not compatible with PS5).
“The DualShock 4 wireless controller and PlayStation officially licensed third-party gamepad controllers will work with supported PS4 games.
“Both the PS Move Motion Controllers and the PlayStation VR Aim Controller will work with supported PS VR games on PS5.”
Regarding licensed and third-party peripherals, Sony advised users to check with the manufacturer to see whether it will be compatible with PlayStation 5.
The design of the PlayStation 5 has been praised by some fans, hailing its futuristic aesthetics, while others have compared it to a large WiFi router. The controller is a radical departure from the classic PlayStation design, which has only ever changed marginally from console to console.
The news that PS4 controllers would only be compatible with supported PS4 games on PlayStation 5 made a huge splash online, with gamers voicing their opinions on Twitter.
Microsoft used this opportunity to remind the Xbox faithful that all Xbox One controllers would be compatible with the new Xbox Series X, also scheduled to be released at the end of 2020.

Neither the Xbox Series X or PlayStation 5 have confirmed prices, but both are expected to be in the region of £450 – £500.
