Baby mauled to death by husky after owners ‘took it to woods for sled-racing’

The incident, near Woodhall Spa, was said to have happened as the dog was put in a van

A man and a woman have been arrested after a three-month-old baby girl died in a suspected dog mauling after the husky’s owners reportedly took it into a woodland to race.

The baby died following an incident at Ostler’s Plantation near Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire at 11pm on Sunday.

A 40-year-old woman and a 54-year-old man were arrested on suspicion of being in charge of a dog that was out of control. They were released on bail on Monday after being quizzed by police.

Chief Superintendent Andy Cox, of Lincolnshire Police, said the incident was “exceptionally sad”.

Cox asked people not to spread speculation about what happened to the baby, especially on social media “where facts can become distorted”.

According to locals, the dog’s owners regularly raced it and other huskies on converted ‘sleds’ after dark at the popular forest, The Mirror reported.

The newspaper further suggested that the incident happened as the dog was being put in the back of a van and quoted a local dog breeder as saying that husky racing in the woodlands was common knowledge and was legal, with a licence.
