Footage posted on Twitter below shows the devastating impact of the blast, which caused a mushroom cloud of smoke to cover the city.
Hospitals in Beirut are understood to be overwhelmed with casualties.

Reuters news agency quotes sources as saying 10 bodies have been pulled from the wreckage.

There are reports coming out of Lebanon suggesting the cause of the blast could have been a chemical storage facility having caught on fire.
This comes at a politically tense time in Lebanon, following recent protests against the government’s handling of an economic crisis.
