McDonald’s are ditching toys from their famous Happy Meals for this…

The kids will be rioting in the streets...

Ben Kenyon

Since the dawn of time our McDonald’s Happy Meals have come with a toy.

Our six-year-old selves were hooked on the things the moment we realised we could get a burger, chips AND a toy.

There was the brilliant Jurassic Park toys, the old school Ronald McDonald figurines and those brilliant ones from the Toy Story film. We’ve probably got a stash of them still stuffed under the bed.

But McDonald’s is now planning on ditching this age-old tradition – for a while at least anyway.

We’re not sure how kids will react, but the fast food giant is swapping the traditional Happy Meal toy for a book instead.

McDonald’s said it hopes to give away 17 million paperbacks between now and Valentine’s Day.

If you’re that 22-year-old bloke still buying Happy Meals on the sly, you’ll probably be finding a copy of ‘Paddington’ by Michael Bond and ‘Happy Valentine’s Day, Mouse!’ by Laura Numeroff in your box over the coming days.

Big Ron McDon has teamed up with literacy charity Reading is Fundamental and publishers Harper Collins to bring books to millions of children.

Over the past three years they’ve given away more than 50 million books.

The toys are coming back soon though, right?
