Newborns arrive as Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine rages on
Heartwarming images have revealed the moment a young mother gave birth to a baby in a Ukraine metro station while Russian bombs were being dropped overhead.
Pictures of a 23-year-old mother giving birth to her baby daughter Mia below the streets of Kyiv have since been shared across social media, offering a small glimmer of hope amid a particularly dark and disastrous week for world news.
Mia was helped into this world by the city’s police while her mother and other Ukrainian locals sheltered in an underground metro station from the Russian destruction taking place above.
A number of images were taken mere moments after little Mia was born and subsequently shared online (with the permission of her mother) by Ukrainian politician Hannah Hopko.
Alongside these photos, Hobko – who works as a Chairwoman of Democracy in Action Conference – shared a short explanation, providing some context around this very unusual birth.
“Mia was born this night in stressful environment- bombing of Kyiv,” she explained.
“Her mom is happy after this challenging birth giving and immediately departing to shelter.
“When Putin kills Ukrainians we appeal to mothers in Russia and Belarus to protest against Russia war in Ukraine. We defend lives and humanity!”
Soon after, Hopko posted another update revealing that Mia wasn’t the only baby to be born amid ongoing political unrest.
Three days into danger warnings, Hobko posted that “meanwhile, in the basement of the maternity ward, in conditions, far from those who deserve a new life – the voice of the newborn…It’s a boy!”
This news comes shortly after a second image from the streets of Kyiv caught fire on social media.
This one, posted by former first lady of Ukraine, Kateryna Yushchenko, appears to show an as-yet-unidentified 80-year-old man queuing up to enlist in the army and defend his country.
According to reports, the elderly gent was doing it “for his grandkids”.
