North Korea announced that they have constructed a detailed plan to launch numerous of ballistic missiles toward the US Pacific territory of Guam, the Washington Post reports.
Guam is a major military hub, with a population of around 160,000 and around 7,000 US military personnel. The authoritarian state said that the plan would be ready in about a week and sent to Kim Jong-un for approval.
According to the announcement, North Korea is nearly ready to fire four missiles over Japan and into waters around Guam. In response, Washington has been testing its missile defence systems.
It would be up to Kim Jong-un whether the move actually is carried out. It said the missiles would hit waters 19 to 25 miles from the island.
North Korea also dismissed President Donald Trump’s threat of “fire and fury” if the regime doesn’t deescalate. Over the years, North Korea has made many threats and displays of power, but the recent announcement is unusual even for them.
However, it seems extremely unlikely that North Korea would risk all-out war with the US, particularly when the reliability of their intercontinental ballistics is largely unknown.
US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson told reporters: “Americans should sleep well at night.
“Nothing that I have seen and nothing that I know of would indicate that the situation has dramatically changed in the last 24 hours.”
