People are very confused about the presence of a black “IS” flag in Hackney

Not what you'd expect to see on your local high street...

Well this is weird.

If you’ve been to Hackney recently you may have seen a black poster featuring the word “IS”.

Facebook user Alan Wolfson spotted a black flag in East London with nothing else on it other than the letters ‘IS’. As he understood it, the flag was one part of a collection intended to spell out the phrase: “HACKNEY IS FASHION”.

Aside from being a factually inaccurate mantra, the absence of the additional flags in the sequence means the banner looks a bit like it could be propaganda for so-called ‘Islamic State’.

Hackney Council have since told Metro that although they were aware of the flags, they had nothing to do with putting them up. The Evening Standard  report that they were actually installed over a year ago, and Andrew Sissons, Hackney Walk development’s strategy director, told the newspaper that they are due to be ‘updated shortly’.

So, not a black IS flag, but a black flag with IS on it and absolutely zero context, just hanging there, flapping in the wind.
