“Remember the Roma genocide”
There is a long overdue conversation taking place in the United Kingdom right now regarding racism in the country and the role that racial discrimination has played in its history.
As statues of slave traders fall across the country, and institutions named after those same people are having their names change, there is a genuine feeling among many that this moment represents a unique opportunity.
One cannot claim to be anti-racist, however, unless they oppose racism against everyone. As one of Europe’s most marginalised people, gypsies, travellers and Roma are painfully aware of how racial discrimination.
We spoke to a young Romani Gypsy Traveller woman who shared her experiences of racism with us, and explained why people cannot turn a blind eye to attacks on any community.
