School system worker loses job after correcting student’s spelling on Twitter

A lighthearted attempt at humour backfired

JOE

On the surface, the idea of someone working within the education system losing their job for correcting a student’s spelling might seem a bit harsh.

Still, that’s exactly what’s happened over the pond this week.

Katie Nash, who worked as a media service coordinator with the Frederick County Public School System in Maryland, was let go after sending a tweet to a student in which she corrected his spelling of the word ‘tomorrow’.

A tweet sent by the student on January 5 asked that the schools be closed ‘tammarow’. Nash responded ‘But then how would you learn how to spell ‘tomorrow?’

Although her reply was almost certainly intended in a lighthearted way, she confirmed on Friday that the tweet had been enough for her to lose her job.

‘As a new employee, I think I sort of would have expected that there would have been some counselling or some suggestions on how to improve,’ the Daily Mail quote her as saying on Twitter.

‘Any social media manager is looking for increasing engagement, and that’s sort of the expected parameter.’

‘I think a conversation about how we engage with students would have been completely appropriate and I would have welcomed that.’
