Five suspected terrorists have been killed by Spanish police in the town of Cambrils, hours after the attack in Barcelona.
Seven people are said to have been injured, one critically, when a car was driven into them early on Friday. According to Spanish media, the attackers’ vehicle overturned and police shot them when they tried to get out.
Police have also said that the five men, who are linked to the attack in Barcelona on Thursday afternoon, were all wearing explosive belts. However, it has since become clear that the belts were in fact fake.
Controlled explosions were carried out at the scene, and police have since said that the situation in the town, which is just 70 miles down the coast from Barcelona, was now under control.
13 people were killed in Barcelona when a van mounted the pedestrianised area of the city’s Las Ramblas and drove into crowds. Many more were left injured by the attack which has been claimed by Islamic State.
Police are also connecting another explosion, which took place in a house in the town of Alcanar on Wednesday evening, to the events in Barcelona and Cambrils. One person was killed by the blast, and Police chief Josep Lluis Trapero has since indicated that it came as one of the residents of the house had been “preparing an explosive device”.
