Susanna Mushatt Jones, the world’s oldest known person, has passed away in a nursing home in Brooklyn, at the age of 116.

Jones was born in Montgomery, Alabama – a city famous for its bus boycott during the American civil rights movement – in 1899.

She was one of 11 siblings, and attended a school for black girls in a time when much of America was still deeply segregated along racial lines.

Jones’ family members have credited her long life to love of family and generosity to others.

No specific cause of death has been announced, but it is known that she had been sick for the past two weeks.

Susanna became Guinness World Records’ official oldest person when Misao Okawa died in Tokyo last year, aged 117.
