Days on from the Conservatives losing an overall majority in parliament in the General Election, Theresa May has reshuffled her Cabinet.
Damian Green has been appointed first secretary of state in the reshuffle, essentially making him second-in-command to the PM.
David Gauke, who had previously held the role of chief secretary to the Treasury, has now been appointed as works and pensions secretary with former Justice Secretary Liz Truss replacing him. Commons leader David Liddington takes over as justice secretary and Lord Chancellor.
Green – who went to university with the Mrs May – also becomes the minister for the Cabinet Office in the reshuffle, replacing Ben Gummer, who lost his seat on Thursday.
Justine Greening, who opposed the PM’s policy of expanding grammar schools, remains as education secretary.
Elsewhere, Greg Clark (energy and industrial strategy secretary), Liam Fox (international trade secretary), Sajid Javid (communities and local government secretary), Philip Hammond (Chancellor of the Exchequer), Amber Rudd (home department secretary), David Davis (exiting the European Union secretary) and Michael Fallon (defence secretary) all retain their positions, as does Boris Johnson.
Johnson will continue as foreign affairs secretary after calling on Tory MPs to back the prime minister in a leaked WhatsApp message.
