For many of us lucky enough not to have seen a loved one suffer in an intensive care unit, the numbers have largely become white noise. The world is in a state of permanent doom, and every day someone tells you the doomometer has gone up a bit. It is human instinct to tune out.

But the numbers released on January 13th are sure to fire a rocket up the arse of many rule flouters, if not the government who have presided over the worst pandemic response in Europe.

100,000 Britons have now died from the coronavirus, after 1,564 more deaths were announced on Wednesday January 13th. That is a record number of daily deaths.

To put into perspective how many people 100,000 is greater than the capacity of Barcelona’s Camp Nou, the largest football stadium in Europe.

But, there is light at the end of the very long tunnel. Vaccinations are being administered, with three different vaccines approved.

And prime minister Boris Johnson today confirmed that vaccine centres will be open 24 hours a day “as soon as possible.”
