Your old iPod could be worth over £20K

Old Apple products have become lucrative collectables

Old Apple products such as iPhones, iPods, and Macs that were top-of-the-range when they were released are probably gathering dust in a box somewhere now.

But some of them could be worth thousands of pounds.

As the desire for retro noughties tech grows, old devices such as these could be worth staggering amounts to the right buyer, to the extent that old Apple products are now collected like sports memorabilia or gaming cards.

iPods in particular have become valuable collectibles since Apple announced in September 2014 that it was discontinuing the iPod.

For example, a second-generation iPod classic – the last to have the iconic moving wheel – still in its packaging can be worth as much as £20,000, according to the Guardian.

Even newer models of iPod can go for thousands due to their huge storage capacities, which are far greater than most modern iPhones.

And one fourth-generation red-and-black special edition iPod released in partnership with U2 sold on eBay for $90,000 (£66,000).

Professional eBay trader Hermie Brieto suggested to the Guardian that Apple’s rich history was driving up prices.

“It’s because Apple’s been around for a while, and a lot of people, product-wise, they like Apple very much,” Brieto said.

“I guess the collectability is because of Steve Jobs, and the history of Apple.”

So if you’ve got an old Nano, a Shuffle, or any other retro Apple gear, you could be quids in.

You’ll need to do a couple of things before you stick it up online and wait for the bids to roll in though.

Remember to reset the factory settings on the item so all of your data and personal information is wiped – you can do this using your Apple ID or through your device settings.

You should also make sure that you remove any password locks on your handset and that it is fully charged before it’s sent away.

And of course, there is never any guarantee that anything you put up for sale will go for a certain price or even get sold at all – but you never know.
