One of the most high profile phenomenons of recent political history is identity politics. While it no doubt existed prior to our current age, identity politics has been cast into the forefront of the political battlefield, due in part to minorities having a louder voice than they have ever had before.

While many commentators claim that politics, by its very nature, is identity politics – that it is impossible to exist within our world without a recognition of the groups in which we reside – it has many critics.

One such critic is the conservative journalist and author Douglas Murray, who spoke to JOE ahead of the release of his new book, The Madness of Crowds: Gender, Race and Identity.

Invoking the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Murray stated his belief that identity politics are at odds with the idea that people should be judged solely on the contents of their character.
