Sergio Romero faces more uncertainty over his future as MLS move collapses

Simon Lloyd

Things go from bad to worse for the United back-up keeper

Sergio Romero’s hopes of leaving Manchester United have been dealt a further blow after the back-up goalkeeper’s hopes of sealing a move to Major League Soccer have been dashed.

After patiently playing the role of David De Gea’s understudy for five years, Romero had looked certain to depart Old Trafford in the summer when Dean Henderson returned to United from a successful season-loan spell at Sheffield United.

Despite a tempting offer from Everton, United blocked his exit – a decision which angered the goalkeeper’s teammates and prompted a furious deadline day Instagram post from his wife.

Having not secured a move elsewhere within the European window, it was reported at the start of the month that Romero was open to a move to MLS. However, talks with David Beckham’s Inter Miami came to nothing, with the window for MLS clubs closing in the early hours of Friday morning.

Romero has slipped to fourth choice at United with Lee Grant named ahead of him in the club’s Champions League squad. They will now have to continue to pay his £100,000-a-week wages until at least January, when the transfer window opens again.

Reports have suggested Romero is upset by United’s treatment, and will only leave the club when he received the right offer to do so.
