For a short while at least.
Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue in New York, one of the most recognisable buildings in the world, was briefly given a new name on Google Maps on Saturday, much to the amusement of many and the disgust of supporters of US President elect Donald Trump.
For approximately nine hours, internet users who typed Trump Tower in New York into Google were met with a pin pointing to the location of the building on Google Maps, with the name changed to ‘Dump Tower’ instead.
Changing a name on Google Maps is supposed to require the authorisation of a Google employee, but it is unclear how this particular transformation came about.
Google later released a statement, saying that “some inappropriate names were surfacing in Google Maps that should not be, and we apologise for any offence this may have caused. Our teams immediately took action and have fixed the issue”.
Not before the Internet had its say on matters, of course…
