He was discussing the parallels he saw between Meghan’s experience and his mother’s.
Prince Harry has compared his and wife Meghan Markle’s relationship to that between his mother Princess Diana and Dodi Fayed, as he discussed the extent of his wife’s mental health struggles whilst the couple lived in the UK.
Speaking to Oprah Winfrey as part of his new docuseries, The Me You Can’t See, which focuses on mental health and the struggles that people go through, Harry spoke candidly about his own struggles and those of his wife Meghan Markle.
He was just 12 years old when his mother died following a car crash in September 1997. Diana and her Egyptian boyfriend Fayed, were both killed in the crash in Paris. And the parallels between his mother’s experience in the royal eye and his wife’s have not been lost on Harry.
In the series he opens up about the suicidal thoughts that Markle had whilst living in the UK, which were first revealed by her in her interview with Oprah in March.
Speaking about when his wife first told him about her struggles, the Duke of Sussex explained how he didn’t feel that he could go to his family about the issue.
He said: “I was ashamed that it got this bad. I was ashamed to go to my family.
“Because to be honest with you, like a lot of other people my age could probably relate to, I know that I’m not gonna get from my family what I need.
‘I then had a son who I’d far rather be solely focused on, rather than every time I look into his eyes, wondering whether my wife is going to end up like my mother and I’m going to have to look after him myself.’
Speaking to Oprah, who co-produced the series with Harry, he continued: “My mother was chased to her death while she was in a relationship with someone that wasn’t white, and now look what’s happened.
“You want to talk about history repeating itself. They’re not going to stop until she dies.”
Harry also revealed that the only thing that prevented Meghan from killing herself was that she didn’t want him to “lose another woman in his life.”
The new five episode docuseries, which features the likes of Lady Gaga and Glenn Close discussing their mental health struggles along with others from around the world, is available on Apple TV.
