The news was confirmed in a brief statement by Breitbart on Tuesday.

Breitbart News Network has confirmed that Steve Bannon has stepped down as Executive Chairman, a role he has served since 2012.

A brief statement released on the Breitbart News Network website on Tuesday confirmed that Bannon had stepped down from the role and that he will work together with Breitbart “on a smooth and orderly transition”.

“I’m proud of what the Breitbart team has accomplished in so short a period of time in building out a world-class news platform,” Bannon said.

“Steve is a valued part of our legacy, and we will always be grateful for his contributions, and what he has helped us to accomplish,” Breitbart CEO Larry Solov added.

Bannon’s departure from Breitbart comes only days after he expressed regret over comments made public in Michael Wolff’s book, Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House, which was released ahead of schedule amid much fanfare last week.

In the book, Bannon describes a meeting between Donald Trump Jr and a group of Russians at Trump Tower during the 2016 election campaign as “treasonous” and “unpatriotic”.

Bannon’s quotes met with a ferocious response from President Donald Trump, who said that his former chief strategist had “not only lost his job, he lost his mind” after his departure from The White House.

Bannon subsequently issued a statement expressing regret at the remarks that appeared in the book and claimed that he was talking about Paul Manafort – a campaign manager for Donald Trump during the 2016 election – rather than Donald Trump Jr.

Donald Trump himself referred to Bannon in a tweet hitting out at Wolff late last week, saying: “Watch what happens to him (Wolff) and Sloppy Steve (Bannon)!”
