“When the road is clear for cannabis, when federal laws come into play, we’re absolutely going to take a look at it”
The CEO of Uber has revealed in an interview that the company are considering the prospect of delivering cannabis in the future. It will be dependent on federal law and regulation but, despite marijuana remaining illegal under federal law, the federal government has been allowing states to legalise the drug over recent years.
So far 16 states have legalised cannabis for recreational use, with New York the latest to do so at the end of March. The District of Columbia have also legalised the drug.
In an interview with CNBC’s TechCheck, CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said: “When the road is clear for cannabis, when federal laws come into play, we’re absolutely going to take a look at it.”
However Khosrowshahi went on to say that for now, the company will be focusing on its current delivery options, saying: “Right now with grocery, with food, with alcohol etc. we see so much opportunity out there and we’re going to focus on the opportunity at hand.”
The recent legalisation of cannabis in New York also allows the delivery of marijuana products in the state. At the moment, California, Nevada and Oregon are the only states that allow cannabis delivery services with no restrictions to those aged 21 or above. In places such as Arizona and Colorado a person must be registered with the state as an approved medical marijuana consumer or caregiver in order to get it delivered.
